was messing w/ some munny vinyls today, reminded me of this :)

first time I used illustrator in years... and haven't used pantone colors for work ever before this.

made some stickers from this and stuck them everywhere for fun, I don't think anyone noticed tho haha...

CraftROBO cutting machine is pretty badass... I just wish it didn't have to use the feeder sheets, which wear out too quickly. There has to be a better option than what is provided.

I heard that you can just reuse the protective sheets w/ spraymount, and it will work just fine.

Yesterday I was defeated by a simple ikea wardrobe... I've made like 4 or 5 of these things already, all w/o a hitch... but that experience didn't matter...

took me like 10 hours, a grip of steel L brackets, and a ton of wood screws and glue...

to make one cabinet! haha so sad....

when particle board fractures, should just buy a new piece- but I can't just give up!

however, the final finish was stronger than the original wardrobe. can't tell it exploded in a cloud of sawdust and splinters, unless you look under the shelves or underneath certain panels...

lesson learned though. $90 ≠ 10 hours. plus buying a new drill. and supplies.

just glad my cousin didn't trip out after I broke all her stuff :)

RIP Lawnmower Blenny

Today I came home to find my lawnmower blenny upside-down and dead on the sand, stiff from rigor mortis.

Had it for about a year, and it had grown to about 3.5" long and super plump. What coulda killed it?

My first guess was that the pistol shrimp might have blasted it, since it was right next to the burrow. However, there were no visible wounds, so I took to google.

Turns out these guys are susceptible to strange internal parasites, and it would explain why its belly was freakin huge.

I was about to toss it out, but then I thought to myself, "Why not feed it to something else?"

anemone mouths can open WIDE.

see that lump on the bottom? there's a fin sticking out, within seconds the anemone had enveloped its dinner.

Next to it is a verrry jealous maroon clown... it wouldn't stop trying to pull out the dead fish.

GG blenny...

I hope you and your nasty internal parasites make my anemone huge...

IT WORKED!!!! was gone for the weekend, came back and the thing was almost 2x as big!!

Reef Tank, 1 year later

One year after my last reef tank related post...

I upgraded to an 120gal reef tank, from the 40gal. The old tank is now a frag tank on the 2nd floor. Can finally raise SPS corals in the main tank now---

What do I do in my spare time?

a close-up of the coraline encrusted evil tiki god being worshipped by a troll and anemone (horde of course) >:D muahaha how many innocent creatures have been sacrificed to appease him??!

the anemone used to be a fatty white fro on top of his head but it moved to get outta the lights

a bit of backstory: basically, everything died when I moved the tank from the office to my house (totally my fault). lost some corals, clowns, another lawnmower!, some shrimp and crabs :( soooo... now that the tank is all settled again, i moved about 50% of the live rock to the sump, and started restocking again.

some random info for other fellow aquarists, from my own experience:

1) emerald crabs are great herbivores when little- then they become carnivorous death machines when they grow up. don't listen to the fishstores, they'll gobble up your little fish one by one... I saw it catch, kill, and eat my firefin goby with my very own eyes!!

2) same goes for bristleworms... sure, they're great detrivores, but who knew they would grow to be over 6" extended? we finally fished it out w/ chopsticks after a coupla months of camping the tank at night- but not until it ate a clownfish, a cleaner shrimp, and a fire shrimp...

3) everyone needs a tiki monster in the tank for the fish to worship...

good news is: we now have 2 tanks at the office!! hahaha bernie and steve both got one, the latter being home to the epic biggity big (pics later)

"Russian Northern coast is a vast territory lays for a few thousand of miles and all this coastline is inside the Polar Circle. Long polar winters mean no daylight at all, just one day changes another without any sign of the Sun rising above the horizon. There is only polar night for 100 day a year.

But across this Northern coast there was always a short way for the cargo boats to travel from Eastern part of Russia to the Western. Now this trip can be made fairly easy with the appearance of all the satellite navigation equipment like GPS and others, but during the Soviet Era they had none of this.

So, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union decided to build a chain of lighthouses to guide ships finding their way in the dark polar night across uninhabited shores of the Soviet Russian Empire. So it has been done and a series of such lighthouses has been erected. They had to be fully autonomous, because they were situated hundreds and hundreds miles aways from any populated areas. After reviewing different ideas on how to make them work for a years without service and any external power supply, Soviet engineers decided to implement atomic energy to power up those structures. So, special lightweight small atomic reactors were produced in limited series to be delivered to the Polar Circle lands and to be installed on the lighthouses. Those small reactors could work in the independent mode for years and didn’t require any human interference, so it was very handy in the situation like this. It was a kind of robot-lighthouse which counted itself the time of the year and the length of the daylight, turned on its lights when it was needed and sent radio signals to near by ships to warn them on their journey. It all looks like ran out the sci-fi book pages, but so they were."
